Florence from above: a curated guide to the city’s best panoramic views
FLORENCE FROM ABOVE: A CURATED GUIDE TO THE CITY’S BEST PANORAMIC VIEWS
At Valdirose, we always encourage our guests to change their perspective. Florence is a masterpiece when walked on foot, but it becomes pure poetry when observed from above. When the golden hour strikes, the terracotta rooftops, the winding Arno river, and the rolling Tuscan hills blend into a single, breathtaking canvas.
Whether you are looking for a rewarding climb up a Renaissance tower, a quiet bench in a blooming garden, or a secret terrace for an afternoon coffee, here is our personal selection of the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints in and around Florence.
THE HILLS & HOLY PLACES
Basilica di San Miniato al Monte
The View: We affectionately call this place “la Porta del Cielo” (the Gate of Heaven). Standing high above the city, this Romanesque basilica offers a mystical, silent alternative to the crowded squares below.
Valdirose Tip: Don't miss the adjacent Cimitero di San Miniato al Monte, a monumental cemetery filled with beautiful, melancholic statues and a profound sense of peace.
How to get there: Take bus line 13 from Santa Maria Novella station directly to the church, or enjoy a scenic walk up the Rampe del Poggi.
Piazzale Michelangelo
The View: The most iconic, postcard-perfect terrace in Florence. From here, the entire historic center unfolds right before your eyes, with the Duomo standing proudly in the middle.
How to get there: Easily reachable via bus line 13 from Santa Maria Novella station, or on foot via the historic Rampe del Poggi pathways.
Fiesole
The View: A small, ancient hilltop town just outside the city borders. Fiesole looks down upon the entire Florentine valley, offering an expansive, breezy view framed by cypress trees and olive groves.
How to get there: Take bus line 7 from Piazza San Marco directly to the main square of Fiesole.
BLOOMING GARDENS & HISTORIC FORTRESSES
Giardino delle Rose
The View: A real balcony overlooking the historic center, nestled just below Piazzale Michelangelo. It is a dreamy, romantic garden where you can sit among hundreds of rose varieties and Folon's poetic sculptures.
Giardino di Villa Bardini
The View: An elegant, terraced garden that offers an intimate look over the Arno.
Valdirose Tip: This place is highly recommended at the end of April during the spectacular purple wisteria bloom, or in the summer when they host a magical open-air cinema under the stars.
Giardino di Boboli
The View: The grand, green heart of Florence behind Pitti Palace. As you climb its monumental avenues toward the Knight’s Garden, you will find classical vistas blending into the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
Forte Belvedere
The View: A massive Renaissance fortress overlooking the city. Its high stone walls provide a dramatic 360-degree view, often hosting contemporary art exhibitions during the summer months.
HISTORIC TOWERS & ARCHITECTURAL ROOFTOPS
Cupola del Brunelleschi & Campanile di Giotto
The View: The ultimate architectural climbs. Scaling the steps of the Cathedral's Dome or Giotto's Bell Tower places you at the very heart of the city's skyline, looking down at the tiny streets below.
Torre d’Arnolfo (Palazzo Vecchio)
The View: Rising high above Piazza della Signoria, this crenellated tower offers a spectacular, commanding view of the civic heart of Florence and the Duomo nearby.
Torre di San Niccolò
The View: Standing tall as a medieval gate in the San Niccolò neighborhood, this tower offers a unique, lower-altitude view that makes you feel deeply connected to the river and the city's ancient walls.
Torrino della Specola
The View: Located inside the Specola Museum, this upper octagonal room was historically used as an astronomical observatory. From here, you enjoy an all-round, rare view of both the Florentine sky and the city below.
SECRET SALONS, CAFÈS & EXCLUSIVE TERRACES
Biblioteca delle Oblate
The View: A wonderful public library housed in a former 14th-century convent. On the top floor, you will find a casual cafeteria open from breakfast to aperitif time, offering an impossibly close, eye-level view of Brunelleschi’s Dome.
Caffè del Verone
The View: Located at the top of the Museo degli Innocenti. The loggia, built at the end of the fifteenth century and since then called "verone", was originally the clothes drying room used by the ancient orphanage. Today, it is a serene café overlooking the city rooftops.
Palazzo Gondi
The View: A deeply exclusive, private perspective over Piazza della Signoria. Because of its private nature, accessing this rooftop terrace is an exceptional experience, and it is strictly necessary to contact the historic residence directly to arrange a visit.
